Makeover for Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre

23 Sep 2008

Work has started on a major shopping centre refurbishment in Brisbane for AMP Capital Investors, the second significant redevelopment that Laing O’Rourke has undertaken for the client in recent years.

The project team has commenced on-site works for the $120 million Mt Ommaney Centre Redevelopment Project, which was awarded under a design and construct contract.

Project Manager Peter Murphy said the company’s good reputation and experience in the retail sector helped to secure the major redevelopment, which will be undertaken within a busy retail environment.

“The recent series of shopping centre projects undertaken and completed by Laing O’Rourke clearly define our design and construction capabilities within this sector,” Peter said. “Recent retail projects like Dapto Mall, Westpoint Blacktown and the Ikea Superstore have definitely established our reputation as a retail construction partner.”

The team has worked with AMP for two years to manage and drive the master planning, project management and development approval process.

Operations Manager Simon Hinneberg further acknowledged the extensive work that had gone into the first stage of this delivery.

“The bid team is to be congratulated for their ability and capacity to work with AMP during this process”, he said. “They have been able to match and deliver on every one of the client’s needs and expectations.

“Once the signed contract was received the team was able to commence on-site within days – a fantastic achievement”.

The project showcases the value, benefit and strength of the Laing O’Rourke ‘one-team’ approach with the company positioned to offer AMP a number of services including project management and cost planning, and design and construction management.

Laing O’Rourke subsidiary company Expanded will do the formwork and civil packages while the plant and equipment hire will be through Select, another Laing O’Rourke business.

The new works will expand the gross lettable floor area by 17,700m2 – totally reconfiguring the centre’s interior.

Leveraging off the successful commencement of this project, the Laing O’Rourke team is already assisting the client with plans for future projects on the 22-hectare site.

Works on the Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre Redevelopment are due to be completed by mid-2010.
