Laing O'Rourke increases scholarships at UTS

20 Feb 2008

Laing O'Rourke recently awarded five scholarships to UTS Bachelor of Engineering, Diploma in Engineering Practice continuing students in Civil and Mechanical Engineering.

The scholarships, ranging in value from $14,000 (for second year) to $17,000 (for fourth year) cover one year of the course, including a six-month internship with the company.

The students successful in securing a junior (second year) scholarship were Nathan Grace, Dave Ludenia and Chris Garven. Senior (fourth year) scholarships went to Caesar Natividad and Amy Chaffey.

At the presentation, Infrastructure South Regional Manager Terry Sleiman congratulated the scholars on their achievement.

"We believe UTS offers a great grounding in engineering theory and practice. It's one of the reasons the company awards scholarships to UTS Engineering students and welcomes them aboard as interns," he said.

Laing O'Rourke Principal Mechanical Engineer Brad Lawson also welcomed and congratulated the scholars. Brett will supervise two of the students and looks forward to having them on board early this year.

Apart from having to be a student in the mechanical or civil engineering majors, applicants needed to demonstrate an academic record with a credit average or above, good communication skills, initiative and leadership skills.

General Manager Human Capital Mark Vining said Laing O'Rourke would roll out a more extensive scholarship program within targeted Australian universities throughout 2008, as a means of attracting new talent to the business and ensuring that Laing O'Rourke remained front of mind to students.

In the next semester, scholarships also will be awarded to UTS Construction Management students, as well as scholars at University of Queensland, QUT and James Cook University.
